Federal Battery Rebate – How Can I Be Eligible?

If we’ve been thinking about putting a solar battery on our house or company, we might have heard of the federal battery rebate starting 1 July 2025. It’s an important development because it can shave off the initial price of a battery system by a considerable margin — around 30% off the price of the hardware. However, as with any rebate, there are some conditions and terms we’ll want to be aware of to make sure we qualify.

Basically, what the government is doing is offering a rebate in the form of Small-Scale Technology Certificates, or STCs. These certificates are awarded based on the available capacity of the battery — that is, the actual energy we can get out of it, and not rated size. For every kilowatt-hour of available capacity, we get a number of these certificates that translate to dollars off our system price. In 2025, the value is around $40 per certificate, and we can redeem a maximum of 50 kWh of usable battery capacity per system. To put that into perspective, if we have a 10 kWh battery, we could save around $3,700. Not bad saving at all!

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Now that we’ve talked about what we stand to gain, let’s see what we need to do in order to qualify. First off, the battery’s nominal size must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh. But remember, the rebate only covers the first 50 kWh of usable capacity. We’ll also need to make sure the battery and inverter are approved by the Clean Energy Council. This is important because it guarantees the equipment meets Australian safety and performance standards. Utilizing something that isn’t accredited could put the rebate at risk and cause problems down the track.

Another significant consideration is who suits the system. Whoever suits the system needs to be accredited by the Clean Energy Council or Solar Accreditation Australia. This implies that they are qualified and trained to install the system properly and safely. We wouldn’t want to risk it with an unqualified person working on our system.

Our battery must be installed with a solar PV system — stand-alone batteries don’t qualify for this rebate. And the system must be capable of being connected to a Virtual Power Plant, or VPP. That’s a system where many batteries work together to help the grid during periods of high demand. We do not have to join a VPP, but our system needs to be installed so that we can be connected if we want to do so in the future.

When Does the Installation Need to Take Place?

There is timing too. The battery needs to be installed on or after 1 July 2025. The installation date is official when the installer signs the Certificate of Electrical Compliance. If the system was installed prior to this date, sadly, it won’t be eligible, even though it hasn’t been activated yet. This rebate is for homes, small businesses, and community centers everywhere in Australia, with no income or postcode limitation. Just remember, however, that the rebate can only be applied for once per electricity meter.

How Does the Rebate Work?

When we buy our battery system from a certified installer, they will handle the rebate claim for us. That equates to us having the discount at the outset instead of waiting for a refund in the future. The value of these certificates will drop a little bit every year until 2030, so there is an obvious benefit in having the system installed sooner rather than later.

What About State Rebates?

On top of the federal rebate, some states offer their own battery incentives. For example, New South Wales has a program encouraging people to connect their batteries to VPPs with extra rebates. Western Australia also offers generous rebates, especially if we’re customers of Synergy or Horizon Power. These state incentives can stack with the federal rebate, making battery storage even more affordable. Just keep in mind that some state programs require participation in a VPP.

Why Should We Care About These Needs?

So why should we care about making sure our battery meets all these needs? Beyond the upfront cost savings, batteries allow us to pocket our electricity bill money by storing up sun energy to use when the sun isn’t shining. They can keep us going during outages and enable us to feed back into the grid during peak hours if we sign up with a VPP. And, in addition, putting in a battery can boost the value of our home and future-proof our energy system as new technology emerges.

What Should We Do Next?

Before we go ahead, we need to choose an accredited installer who even knows what they are doing. Make sure the inverter and battery are certified, and plan for the installation date wisely so we don’t miss out on the rebate. If we delay, the rebate value decreases every year, so the sooner the better.

We can start by determining how much battery capacity will fit our energy use and solar system. Getting some quotes lets us shop around for price and understand how the rebate will be handled. On the day of installation, it’s a good idea to have all the paperwork — like the compliance certificate and invoices — handy in case we ever need them.
