What Is a Data Center? Discover How it works!

DATA CENTER – Each day, we use the internet and we don’t care too much on what is happening with the processes that occur in the background. Watching videos on YouTube, visiting Facebook, searching for stuff via Google, storing photos in the cloud, or using AI tools such as ChatGPT. Have you ever thought about where all this data comes from? The answer is data centers.

A data center is simply a special facility which contains thousands of computers known as servers. Unlike the computer you have at home, which is meant to be used by one or two persons, the data center is meant to work for millions of people simultaneously.

For instance, when you play any video on YouTube, the video is not saved on your mobile phone; rather, it is stored in the server located inside the data center. As soon as you click the “Play” button, the server finds the video and sends it to your mobile phone within a few seconds.

The situation is the same when you make an online transaction using online banking, share pictures in the cloud, or ask a question to a ChatGPT. The data centers are the places where all the digital information required for these tasks is stored, processed, and sent.

But that is not all about data centers. There is huge infrastructure behind the scenes meant for continuous operation of the entire system. The list of facilities includes transformers, switchboards, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), backup generators, cooling systems, and fast networks.

There are several highly professional data center companies in Australia. These include NEXTDC, AirTrunk, Equinix, and CDC Data Centres. These data centers are utilized by such global companies as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, banks, and governmental bodies. Instead of having to construct their own data centers, these organizations rent out space in secure data centers.

It would be quite easy to compare data centers to the big apartment complex. While the apartment building owners provide such amenities as electricity, air conditioning, and security, tenants bring along all the furniture they need and run their own business there. Data centers are not different in that respect. All the infrastructure is provided by the data center company itself, but its customers set up their own servers and digital services inside.

Nowadays, there is no single digital service available without the use of data centers. Such technologies as social media, internet banking, cloud computing, video streaming, and artificial intelligence just cannot function without them. A data center can be thought of as a digital factory of today.
