What roles do Citipower & Powercor play in Victoria’s power?

Citipower & Powercor are distributing electric power to most regions of Victoria while ensuring the electricity is supplied safe and with stability to both the house and companies. The services of Citipower and Powercor are guided by the AER in setting prices, standard of service provision, and operation.

Originally state-owned assets, Citipower and Powercor were privatised in the late 1990s as part of the Victorian government’s deregulation of the electricity market. Today, the two companies are owned by APA Group, one of Australia’s largest energy infrastructure companies that specialize in gas and electricity transmission and distribution.

The ownership of Citipower and Powercor by APA Group ensures that these companies remain part of a larger national energy network that allows for energy supply and distribution to different sectors, whether residential, commercial, or industrial. Developing infrastructure and sustainability at APA will be aligned with the long-term goals of both electricity distributors, which will help them enhance the services they offer.

Citipower

This is an electricity distributor located in Melbourne, Australia. Its major area of operation is mainly in the city’s central business district (CBD) and its inner suburbs, such as Docklands, Southbank, and St Kilda. Citipower operates a network that supplies power from power stations into those highly populated, dynamic parts of Melbourne.

Powercor

On the other hand, Powercor caters to a significantly larger geographic territory than that covered by Citipower. Powercor extends way beyond Melbourne. It offers electric supply to large parts of regional and rural Victoria, which covers cities like Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo, and thousands of other smaller towns and rural centers. Its enormous network serves thousands of kilometers of power lines that feed electricity reliably into those more scattered territories.

What do Citipower and Powercor do?

  • Generate Power: It starts with large-scale generators – hydro, wind, solar, coal and gas-fired – that produce the electricity in the National Electricity Market.
  • Transmission: Generated electricity is transported at high voltage along transmission lines. These are the large towers with multiple powerlines that you’ll see across the country.
  • Distribution and meter management: Citipower and Powercor take power from the transmission lines, transform it down to a much lower voltage and distribute it through their poles and wires network to your house or workplace. Their task is to deliver this power supply reliably and safely to your electricity meter that will then measure all electricity you are going to use.
  • Retailer: They share your electricity data with your energy retailer, who is responsible for sending your electricity bills. You’ll need to talk to them regarding your pricing plan or to pay your bills.

Technological Advancements and Sustainability

Citipower and Powercor have embraced technology innovations that would improve the efficiency and sustainability of their operations. They are heavily investing in smart grid technologies that enhance the monitoring and control of their networks. These innovations make it possible to collect better real-time data, manage outages more effectively, and improve energy efficiency.

Both companies are also keen on sustainability, which involves reducing the environmental impact of their operations. For example, Powercor has been looking into how it can integrate renewable energy sources into its grid and encourage energy-efficient practices among its customers. Citipower, being in Melbourne, is part of a city that is moving toward a more sustainable future and is part of the bigger move toward a cleaner energy system.

Key Activities

  • Ensuring network safety and reliability to meet the existing demands of power supply to our customers
  • Expanding and strengthening the network in such a way that future demands of customers for power supply will be met as and when demanded
  • Operation of the network 24×7
  • Connecting new customers to the network
  • Public lighting system maintenance
  • Electricity meters reading
  • Meter data to retailers

Citipower and Powercor are of fundamental importance in supplying electricity to millions of Victorians who reside in cities and the country. The role they play is a result of network management, maintaining infrastructure, and meeting the demands of their customers to keep lights burning at home and business locations. As part of the larger APA Group, they strive to master the difficulties facing this changing landscape of energy but ensure their networks become more reliable, more sustainable, and more capable of delivering the energy the future requires from their communities.

Citipower and Powercor invest continually in technology and infrastructure to ensure customers have electricity that is both reliable and affordable as well as sustainable today and tomorrow.
