Tesla Powerwall 3 – What’s New and Improved?

Tesla Powerwall 3 is now officially launched in Australia and the United States, introducing a significant upgrade to the firm’s home battery line. With an onboard solar inverter, increased power output, and scalable battery capacity, Powerwall 3 is more versatile and efficient compared to the Powerwall 2.

🔋Powerwall 3 vs Powerwall 2: What’s Changed?

Built-in Hybrid Inverter

In contrast to the Powerwall 2, which is AC-coupled and uses an external solar inverter, the Powerwall 3 features an integrated DC-coupled inverter. This enhances energy efficiency and simplifies the system.

Higher Power Output

The Powerwall 3 produces a continuous output of 11.04kW (AU) or 11.5kW (US)—twice the Powerwall 2’s 5kW. This is enough to power heavy loads like EV chargers, air conditioning, and electric ovens.

More Solar Capacity

The American version has six MPPTs of 3.3kW each, while the Australian version has three high-current MPPTs of 6.6kW each. Both models can accept up to 20kW of solar input.

🇦🇺 Powerwall 3 in Australia: Regional Specs

Tesla released Powerwall 3 in Australia in August 2024. While almost identical to the U.S. model, some regional modifications exist:

Despite being a single-phase unit, the Powerwall 3 can be used in multi-phase homes by connecting to just one phase. However, backup functionality will only apply to that specific phase.

🛠️Installation & Scalability

Powerwall 3 is wall- or floor-mountable and expandable. You can connect up to three additional batteries, for a total of 40.5kWh capacity. Also, up to four Powerwall 3 can be installed in parallel, providing:

  • – 44kW inverter output
  • – 80kW solar input

This configuration is best for large homes or small business installations—particularly those with high daytime use or EV charging.

⚡Whole-Home Backup Power

The Powerwall 3 allows for home-backup throughout a grid outage. A Backup Gateway 2 (approximately AUD $1,700–$2,000 installed) is still needed, though. Tesla does provide a “Backup Switch” in the U.S., but not yet in Australia.

The surge peak current of the battery is also increased, strong enough to power large appliances such as air conditioners and pool pumps. From its locked rotor amperage (LRA) rating of 185A, Tesla conservatively projects the system can deliver a maximum of 44kVA—35kW at 240V for a brief period.

🚫Off-Grid Limitations

Despite its capabilities, Powerwall 3 is not officially supported for off-grid systems. It lacks generator integration and advanced off-grid logic, which limits its use in rural properties without grid access. It’s best suited for grid-connected homes that want backup or solar time-shifting.

🚗EV Charging & Charging Rate Limits

While Powerwall 3 provides high output, its battery charging rate is capped at 5kW. This is due to the LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry used, which prioritises safety and longevity over fast charging. As a result, excess solar during peak sun hours may be exported unless you’re using an EV charger or other daytime loads.

🧱Build Quality & Appearance

The Powerwall 3 has a cast aluminium casing that serves as both a heat sink. It has a weight of 130kg, just over the Powerwall 2, but it’s integrated and more compact. Its harsh, simple design is perfect for modern homes and extreme weather.
