Metal Enclosure (Mild steel) – The importance and types

A metal enclosure is a casing made of metal materials such as mild steel, stainless steel, or aluminum. These enclosures protect electrical or electronic equipment from outer threats and environmental factors like moisture, dust, and impact. The materials for metal enclosures are highly durable and strong and are best used in industries that require safety and reliability.

A metal enclosure in the electrical engineering world protects sensitive electrical and electronic equipment from environmental hazards like dust, water, chemicals, and physical impact. The most common solution used is a metal enclosure. It guarantees that the electrical components within it are safe, functional, and free from any potential damage.

Types of Metal Enclosures

1. Mild Steel Enclosure

Since carbon is available only in a low level within the low-carbon variety of the material, in practice, the phrases low-carbon steel and mild steel are commonly employed. Carbon steel refers to metallic members made up from pure iron together with an increase percentage of around 2.1% that increases its strengths. Carbon concentrations may vary accordingly, as follows by specific grades or purposes desired from the finished steel product; for example: 0.05 – 0.25%.

There are several grades of mild steel. But all these grades come under the permissible limit of carbon content. The additional elements added in it help in enhancing useful properties such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and tensile strength. Mild steel is one of the most common materials used for enclosures. It is relatively inexpensive and provides strong protection for electrical components. Mild steel enclosures are usually available in thicknesses ranging from 1.2mm to 1.6mm and are often treated with coatings like zinc anneal for enhanced corrosion resistance. Zinc anneal offers a smooth finish and excellent protection against rust, making it suitable for environments with moderate exposure to moisture and environmental factors.

What is the Difference of Zinc Anneal and Galvanization

  • Thickness of Coating: Zinc-coated steel, or galvanized steel, will have a heavier zinc coating to protect the material more in worse conditions.
  • Finish: Zinc anneal tends to have a more smooth and cleaner finish while the galvanized has a rough surface finish.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Zinc anneal, or galvanized, will resist corrosion better but a bit less when extreme conditions come because of its lesser zinc coating layer.
  • Zinc Anneal and Galvanization are both galvanizing technologies, used in coating steel by the deposition of a layer of zinc, making the metal resistance to corrosion; however, both are different methods of application with respect to coating properties.
  • Zinc anneal is the best for those applications where the finish is expected to be smooth and aesthetic in nature and can tolerate moderate corrosion protection. The galvanization is better used for applications requiring maximum corrosion protection, especially harsh or outdoor environments.
2. Stainless Steel Enclosure

Stainless steel enclosures are usually preferred in environments where better rust and corrosion resistance is expected. The material is mostly rust-, oxidation-, and corrosion-resistant, widely applied in harsher environments such as chemical plants, marine industries, outdoor exposures, etc. Grades 304 and 316 stainless steels are widely used; the former is less corrosive to salt water and corrosive chemicals.

3. Aluminum Steel Enclosure

Aluminum is lighter than either steel or stainless steel. Aluminum enclosures offer superior corrosion resistance and are commonly used in industries where weight is a major factor. They are very suitable for portable equipment and applications where ease of handling or transportation is important. Aluminum is found extensively in telecommunications, solar energy systems, and automation systems.

Quite simply, metal enclosures form a crux in the protection of electrical and electronic appliances from adverse environmental elements to ensure these appliances are reliable and last long.
