Labor’s Battery Rebate Plan – How does it work today?

Big energy savings might be just around the corner. If Labor wins the next federal election, a new plan called the Cheaper Home Batteries Program will kick off from July 1, 2025. The goal? Help households and small businesses afford solar batteries – and cut down those rising power bills.

What’s the Deal?

Under the plan, the government will cover around 30% of the cost of a standard home battery. That’s up to $4,000 off the installation of an 11.5kWh battery – a common size for Aussie homes. The discount will shrink over time as battery prices naturally fall, and it will be delivered through the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (the same one that helps with solar panel subsidies).

And the potential savings are huge. According to the Department of Energy:

  • If you already have solar panels, adding a battery could save you up to $1,100 per year.
  • If you’re installing both solar and a battery system, you could save up to $2,300 per year – that’s nearly 90% of the average family’s electricity bill.

Real Aussies Are Already Saving Big

While this is an election promise, plenty of Australians are already reaping the benefits of solar and battery systems. Here are some real-life examples:

  • 🔋 Sydney couple saves $9,000 per year
After installing solar panels and a battery for about $23,000, one Sydney couple now lives with zero electricity or fuel costs. Their investment paid off fast, and they’re no longer worried about energy bills.
  • ⚡ NSW man cuts power bill by 86%
Nick Pfitzner was the first Aussie to install a Tesla Powerwall back in 2016. Four years later, his electricity costs had dropped by 86%, saving him over $2,000 a year.
  • ☀️ WA family meets 96% of their energy needs with solar + battery
Anthony and his family in Western Australia upgraded their solar setup with a battery system. Now, they cover nearly all their electricity needs with solar – and enjoy much lower power bills.

Why This Matters

With energy bills on the rise and cost-of-living pressures squeezing families, this program could be a game-changer. It doesn’t just save money – it helps Australia shift to cleaner, renewable energy and puts power back into the hands of everyday people.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the battery rebate will let homes and businesses use solar energy “on tap,” even after the sun goes down. He also pointed out that Australia has already hit 46% renewable energy, and is aiming for 82% by 2030.

The government also hopes that more batteries in homes will reduce pressure on the grid – which could help bring down energy prices for everyone, not just those with solar.

What’s the Catch?

Of course, not everyone is on board. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says this plan proves Labor expects energy prices to rise and that the rebate is a way to cover that up. He’s pushing for nuclear energy instead, which he says would lower long-term costs.

Still, many industry experts support the battery plan. The Smart Energy Council called it the “most important energy announcement since solar panel rebates began.” The Property Council of Australia also backed it, saying electrifying homes is the fastest way to lower emissions and energy bills.

This isn’t just an election promise – it’s a sign of where we’re heading. With battery prices falling and real Aussies already saving thousands, the shift to solar and batteries is well underway.

If you’ve been thinking about installing a battery system, now might be the time to start planning. With government support on the horizon, a more affordable, energy-independent future could be just around the corner.
