How to Prepare Your Home for a Solar Battery Installation

Let’s say you’ve decided to add a solar battery to your home. That’s a great move—especially here in Australia, where the sun is generous, and energy bills can be punishing. But before your battery system gets delivered and wired in, there are a few important things you need to do to make sure your home is ready.

We’re not just talking about where the battery goes. Preparing your home for a solar battery installation involves checking your current electrical setup, understanding your energy habits, getting the right approvals, and planning for backup use (especially with our sometimes-unreliable grid). Let’s go through it all together so your install goes smoothly and your battery performs at its best.

Understand Your Energy Usage First

Before choosing a solar battery, it’s worth understanding how and when you use electricity. This will help determine the battery size that makes sense for your home.

We want to look at how much energy you typically use over 24 hours, particularly in the evening and early morning when the sun isn’t shining. Your electricity bill gives you a good starting point, but a smart energy monitor (or your existing solar app, if you have one) can show you real-time data. This information will help your installer size the battery correctly—and avoid overspending on storage you won’t fully use.

Get a Site Inspection or Pre-Assessment

Most battery installers will do a pre-installation site visit or at least request detailed photos of your meter board, switchboard, and proposed battery location.

If your home already has solar, your installer will check whether your current inverter is compatible with the battery you’re planning to add. Some systems need a hybrid inverter, while others use separate units. In older systems, the inverter might need to be replaced altogether.

For homes without solar, your installer will likely recommend installing both the panels and the battery at once. It’s a bit more upfront, but it’s often more efficient and cheaper in the long run.

Review Your Switchboard and Electrical Setup

Many Australian homes, especially those built before the 2000s, have older switchboards that might not support the extra load or new wiring needed for a battery system.

Your installer will assess whether your switchboard needs an upgrade. This might involve:

  • Adding extra circuit breakers
  • Installing isolators for the battery
  • Making room for backup circuits (if you want the battery to supply critical loads during a blackout)
  • Ensuring all components meet current Australian safety standards

It’s not uncommon to need a switchboard upgrade, so don’t be surprised if this comes up during your pre-install discussions. It’s an important part of making sure the system works reliably and safely.

Choose a Suitable Battery Location

Where your battery is installed matters—not just for performance, but for safety and long-term durability.

In Australia, batteries are typically wall-mounted or placed in floor-standing enclosures in these areas:

  • Garage (very common)
  • External wall (sheltered from sun and rain)
  • Utility room or laundry (with good airflow)

Batteries should not be placed in small enclosed cupboards, under stairs, or too close to bedrooms. They need space, airflow, and accessibility for maintenance or replacement.

If you’re installing the battery outdoors, it’ll need a weatherproof enclosure and proper clearance from windows and doors. Most batteries come with IP ratings that confirm their water and dust resistance, but a roof over the unit is still a smart move.

Think About Backup Power Needs

One of the best things about solar batteries is their ability to power your home during a blackout—but not all systems are automatically configured for this.

If backup power is important to you (and let’s face it, who doesn’t want the fridge and Wi-Fi running during an outage?), you’ll need to:

  • Decide which circuits should be backed up. Usually, we pick critical loads—like lights, internet, fridge, and a few power points.
  • Have a backup switchboard or backup circuit wired in.
  • Make sure the battery you choose has blackout capability. Some cheaper models don’t.

It’s a good idea to chat with your installer about what you want the battery to do in a power cut so they can design the system accordingly.

Check Access for Installers

Battery installations involve some fairly bulky gear. The installers will need clear access to the mounting location and the switchboard.

Before installation day:

  • Clear any obstructions near your switchboard
  • Remove items from the garage wall if that’s where the battery is going
  • Ensure there’s a clear path from the street to the install area (especially if it’s at the back of your property)

This will help the team get in, do the job efficiently, and avoid any surprises or delays.

Allow for Conduits and Cabling

Even if you’re not getting an EV charger now or planning to expand your solar, it’s worth future-proofing during your battery install.

We always suggest installing extra conduits during your battery fit-out. That way, if you later want to:

  • Add a second battery
  • Upgrade your inverter
  • Connect to an EV charger
  • Install a home energy management system

…you won’t need to dig up walls or run ugly conduit across your exterior. It’s a small cost now that can save you a lot down the track.

Understand the Permits and Inspections

Most states in Australia require a licensed electrician to notify the network operator before a battery installation. Some distributors may require specific battery models to be on an approved product list.

Your installer will generally handle this paperwork, but it’s good to ask:

  • Will there be a government rebate or feed-in tariff to register for?
  • Will the battery be grid-connected, or is it off-grid?
  • Is there an inspection after installation?

In some areas, you’ll also need a Certificate of Electrical Safety before the battery can be switched on.

Make Sure You Can Monitor It

Once your battery is up and running, you’ll want to keep an eye on how it’s working. Most modern systems come with a monitoring app that shows:

  • Battery charge/discharge levels
  • Solar production
  • Grid import/export
  • Backup status (if supported)

Before install day, make sure your Wi-Fi connection is strong in the area where the inverter or battery monitoring unit will be placed. A poor signal can cause headaches later.

Double-Check Your Insurance Policy

While solar and batteries are generally safe, they’re still a significant electrical investment. It’s smart to contact your home insurer and check:

  • Is your solar + battery system covered?
  • Are there any limits on electrical equipment value?
  • Do you need to inform them about the install?

It only takes a few minutes, but it’s one of those things you’ll be glad you did if anything ever goes wrong.
