Essential Energy – Who are they? A Quick Summary.

Essential Energy is a government-owned electricity network corporation tasked with owning, operating, and maintaining part of Australia’s largest electricity distribution network. It was created in 2011 when Country Energy and Australian Inland Energy and Water were merged. Essential Energy covers an extensive region, providing essential electricity network services to residents and businesses across 95% of NSW and southern Queensland.

🌍 Where Do They Operate?

Mainly over regional, rural, and remote parts of NSW and southern Queensland.

Essential Energy’s network covers around 737,000 square kilometres—a similar size to Germany and the UK combined. This enormous area includes:

  • – 95% of NSW and south-eastern parts of southern Queensland
  • – More than 1,500 regional, rural, and remote towns

📊 Network Size and Reach

Essential Energy’s network is broad and varied:

  • – 183,000 km of over-the-wire powerlines
  • – 1.4 million power poles
  • – 364 zone substations
  • – 139,303 distribution substations
  • – Serving over 890,000 customers, from homes through to businesses, hospitals, and schools

Despite having this broad base, the customer density is very low, at the order of 4.86 customers per kilometer of powerline, making maintenance and service delivery difficult.

🔧 Daily Operations

Important Energy’s day-to-day activities include a range of tasks to ensure the reliability and security of the power supply:

  • – Emergency response 24/7 to power outages
  • – Ongoing maintenance and upgrading of network infrastructure
  • – Asset inspections, including drone surveys
  • – Vegetation management to avoid outages and bushfire hazards
  • – Public lighting operations, like maintenance of some 176,000 streetlights

🌱 Embracing Innovation and Sustainability

Future-proofing by investing in new technology to enable the energy transition:

  • – $10.3 million investment in research and development in 2023–24
  • – Trialling electric vehicle (EV) charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies
  • – Building smart streetlighting solutions and networked EV charging
  • – Building the NEXUS innovation test facility to test next-generation energy systems

🔋 Grid-Scale Energy Storage

As part of overcoming renewable energy integration and network reliability challenges, Essential Energy has:

  • – Developed its first 2MWh battery under an agreement with AGL at Sovereign Hills, Port Macquarie
  • – Constructed an innovation test facility to simulate a future residential house to build our capability and enabling systems for the future energy market

📈 Strategic Goals

Essential Energy’s pillars for strategy are:

  • – Building foundational operations and network support
  • – Enabling connections and load
  • – Enabling the take-up of electric vehicles
  • – Enabling smart communities and new customer solutions
  • – Digital transformation for operational efficiency
