BYD Sealion 7 – Is This the Best EV SUV Right Now?

The BYD Sealion 7 brings a lot to the table. It’s got the performance, technology, and comfort you’d expect from a premium SUV, and it’s got the electric range to make long drives a breeze. Whether you’re looking for an efficient daily driver or a vehicle that can handle your weekend getaways, this SUV has a lot to offer. So, let’s dive into what makes the Sealion 7 such a great option for Australian roads.

Powertrain and Performance

First of all, let’s discuss performance. The BYD Sealion 7 is available in two powertrain options, so you can select the one that is most suited to your driving needs.

If you’d rather have something slightly more economical, the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant may be just right for you. It has a 230 kW engine, which provides you with 308 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque. This translates to 0-100 km/h in only 6.7 seconds – quick enough for all-around driving, but still get you that responsive, playful sense when you press the accelerator.

But if you desire a bit more power and year-round capability, the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model is where it gets really interesting. With 390 kW (523 hp) and an enormous 690 Nm of torque, the AWD Sealion 7 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a blistering 4.5 seconds. This model is ideal if you desire something that provides speed and performance, particularly for highway use or rougher road conditions. And, the extra AWD system provides you with improved traction and handling, which comes in handy when Australia’s weather gets a bit iffy.

Both models feature an 82.56 kWh LFP Blade Battery, which BYD is genuinely proud of for its long life and safety characteristics. The RWD model provides a range of approximately 567 km (NEDC) per charge, more than sufficient for your day-to-day needs and weekend getaways. The AWD model provides 542 km (NEDC), still providing more than sufficient range to get you wherever you need to go without constantly having to search for a charging station.

And in terms of charging, the Sealion 7 is quite good. You can charge it to 80% in just around 32 minutes using DC fast charging, so long drives need not be delayed by long hours of charging. And if you have a 7 kW wallbox charger at home, charging it overnight becomes a piece of cake.

Interior and Comfort

Now, about the interior of the BYD Sealion 7. All about comfort and technology here, with a practical yet luxurious cabin.

The main feature of the interior is the 15.6-inch turnable touchscreen. This screen commands everything – from navigation to entertainment and climate control. It’s intuitive and simple to use, and it comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can stay connected while on the move. If you love music, you’ll love the 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system that makes every drive a concert. And if you like a little mood lighting, the 128-color ambient lighting allows you to set the mood just the way you want.

The Napa leather upholstery that covers the seats gives the interior a very premium feel. You and your passengers can remain comfortable no matter what the weather is like outside, thanks to dual-zone climate control. There’s also a wireless 50W smartphone charger, so goodbye to messy cables, and powered tailgate with foot gesture control when your hands are full.

Space-wise, the Sealion 7 is quite generous. It has a roomy cabin with more than enough room for passengers. Tall individuals won’t even complain about the lack of legroom and headroom since there is a lot of it. It’s ideal for long journeys. The rear seats provide a lot of space, so your passengers won’t be squeezed. In addition, the 500-liter boot is ideal for loading luggage or groceries, and there’s a 50-liter frunk (front trunk) for the smaller items such as charging cables or emergency equipment.

Safety and Driver Assist

Safety is a top priority for BYD, and the Sealion 7 is filled with features to ensure you and your passengers are protected. It features 11 airbags, so you know everyone’s safe in case of a crash. You’ll also have a 360-degree camera system for increased visibility when parking or navigating through narrow spaces. For even greater protection, the car features Hill Hold Assist and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which provide an additional security feature.

When it comes to driver aid, the Sealion 7 has you covered with its Level 2 ADAS. This consists of semi-autonomous features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and forward collision warning. These are perfect for taking the stress out of long drives, particularly on motorways or in stop-start traffic. The car essentially does the driving for you, but it’s still got you in charge.

Design and Build Quality

Exterior-wise, the BYD Sealion 7 is modern and sleek. It has a sporty, coupe-like appearance with a strong road presence. The front has dynamic “OCEAN X” styling, and the rear has unique water-drop tail lamps that make it look futuristic. It’s certainly a car that will attract attention.

BYD employs Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology, where the Blade Battery is embedded directly into the vehicle structure. This increases the rigidity of the car, makes it safer and lighter, enhances performance and efficiency, and provides durability and silky smoothness for years to come.

Pricing and Availability in Australia

The BYD Sealion 7 will likely begin at approximately $55,000 AUD, which is a highly competitive price point in the premium electric SUV segment. Compared to other luxury EVs such as the Tesla Model Y, which is generally more expensive, the Sealion 7 provides tremendous value for the price. It has performance, luxury, and technology, yet it keeps the price lower than some of its competitors.

BYD plans to make the Sealion 7 available across Australia starting in mid-2025. It will be available at BYD dealerships in major cities, which means you’ll have easy access to test drives and the option to buy one when it arrives.

If you’re on the hunt for a high-end electric SUV with performance, luxury, and usability, then the BYD Sealion 7 is an excellent option. It has all that you want – ranging from an extended driving range to quick charging, stylish design, and cozy interior. It’s ideal for Aussie drivers seeking a reliable, green vehicle without compromising on quality.

The BYD Sealion 7 brings a lot of exciting features to the table, and with its affordable price tag, it’s definitely one to watch. Whether you’re new to EVs or looking to upgrade, this SUV is worth considering.
