Advantages of Containerised Switchrooms

Containerised switchrooms are fast becoming a favored choice in many industries around Australia, and for good reason. These structures provide an alternative that is both convenient and efficient compared to the old-fashioned brick switchrooms. For those who have experienced the challenges that come with working on a tight schedule or tough conditions, the benefits of this option would be quite obvious. However, the benefits of using a well-planned and implemented containerised switchroom extend beyond convenience.

Why do containerised switchrooms reduce construction time?

The most significant benefit would be speed. Switchrooms built using conventional methods will need civil works, structure building, and different trades doing their job one after another on site. This will take weeks and even months, especially when weather conditions or accessibility on site become factors. Containerised switchrooms, however, are manufactured in a factory where the electrical room itself is designed and built, wired and tested before being delivered to site. While the site is getting prepared, the electrical room is being made at the same time. By the time the containerized switchroom arrives, all that needs to be done is installation and cabling of the wiring. In some cases, this can shorten the total duration of the project significantly.

How does factory testing improve reliability?

The manufactured system provides the ability to control the quality of each piece in a way that cannot easily be achieved on-site. The manufacturing facility provides an environment in which all components are assembled in a controlled manner and inspected for defects. Wiring is conducted in a more efficient manner, and overall quality will be superior to any assembly that occurs on-site because of limited space, bad weather, and other factors. Testing of the assembled system is a crucial step in the process. During Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), the switch room is energized and tested in the manufacturing facility prior to being shipped. Why are containerised switchrooms ideal for remote locations?

Special issues arise when working on distant or remote sites. Delivery of supplies, coordination of trades, and uniformity in quality could prove to be troublesome in such areas. Containerised switchrooms offer solutions to all these problems. Since everything will have been assembled prior to delivery, very little work will be needed once it reaches its destination. This makes things easier since it minimizes labour needs and logistical problems. For industries like mining where work sites are located away from urban areas, this is a definite advantage.

Can containerised switchrooms be relocated or expanded?

The ability to change or move is one of the primary reasons for their growing popularity. Unlike conventional switchrooms, the containerized switchroom can be moved to another place in case of necessity. Thus, they serve perfectly for temporary facilities or those constructions which might expand further. For instance, there could be a construction site requiring a switchroom temporarily. Rather than constructing a permanent switchroom, the containerized solution is put in place for use and then can be moved elsewhere after the completion of the project. In addition, expansion is also easy, as more containers can be easily added on depending on the load capacity or additional equipment. Thus, they serve perfectly for temporary facilities or those constructions which might expand further.

How do they reduce overall project costs?

Although the initial expense for a containerised switchroom is about the same as conventional construction, there are other cost savings that make the project more economical. Since the duration of construction is shorter, there will be fewer labor expenses, and delays will be minimal. Pre-testing done in the factory ensures no costly corrections have to be made after installation. There are other advantages in terms of logistics and project management. The need for tradesmen and coordination is reduced when the project is easier to manage. In addition, the reusability and relocatability of the switchroom offer additional benefits in the long run.
