These aren’t your slow overnight chargers either — we’re talking about DC fast chargers delivering 150 kW to 350 kW. That’s enough to charge an EV from 10% to 80% in around 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the vehicle.
The idea is to make charging as quick and convenient as a petrol stop. But because it’s not instant, these fast charging stations are designed with comfort and experience in mind. You’re encouraged to stay a while — grab a coffee, check your email, maybe even pick up some groceries.
Major brands like Ampol, Evie Networks, and Chargefox are investing heavily in fast-charging infrastructure across the country. These networks aim to cover both metro and regional Australia to ensure EV owners can travel freely without range anxiety. It’s a big shift from the old servo model, where the goal was to get in and out as fast as possible.
Coffee, Wi-Fi and Retail Therapy
Because EV charging takes longer than refuelling, the modern charging station is all about improving the user experience. In many cases, that means providing things to do while your car charges.
Coffee shops are becoming a central feature of these new-style servos. But we’re not talking instant coffee from a vending machine. We’re talking proper, cafe-style brews. These hubs may include fast-food outlets, cafes with free Wi-Fi, shaded seating, clean toilets, and even convenience stores with quality food options.
This model benefits everyone. Drivers get a comfortable place to wait, and operators increase their sales through longer dwell times. Instead of rushing in and out, people are more likely to spend money, which is great for business.
It’s a small but important shift in how we think about the time we spend refuelling — or recharging. The stop becomes part of the journey, not just a pit stop.
Enter Solar Canopies
With growing concern about grid capacity and carbon emissions, many EV charging hubs are being built with solar canopies. These large solar panel-covered structures serve multiple purposes.
First, they provide shade for parked vehicles, which is especially welcome during Australia’s hot summers. Second, they generate clean electricity to help offset the power used by chargers and onsite businesses. Third, they act as a visual statement: this is a green, forward-thinking facility.
While solar alone can’t power a busy charging hub, it can certainly make a dent in daytime energy use. And when paired with battery storage, solar becomes even more powerful. Stored energy can be used during peak demand times or grid outages, keeping the site operational and reducing stress on the local power network.
In places with high sunlight exposure like Australia, solar canopies are a smart investment. They also reduce the site’s carbon footprint and operating costs over time.
Battery Storage and Microgrids
Beyond solar, many next-gen charging stations are installing battery systems to smooth out their energy demands. When multiple EVs plug into 350 kW chargers, the site can draw as much power as a small neighbourhood. That’s a big strain on the grid.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) help manage this load. They can store energy from the grid during off-peak times or from the solar canopy during the day. Then, during high-demand periods, the battery can feed power to the chargers, reducing peak demand charges and improving energy resilience.
Some sites are even exploring microgrid setups, where solar, battery storage, and grid power work together intelligently. In future, we might even see these hubs offering grid support services, helping stabilise local voltage and frequency during times of stress.
A Community Hub, Not Just a Fuel Stop
As the role of the servo evolves, its social and economic value might actually increase. No longer just a place to grab fuel and go, the new EV hub could become a community meeting point.
Think of it as a blend of a cafe, co-working space, tech centre, and service station. You might pull in to charge, grab a latte, log onto the Wi-Fi, and join a virtual meeting. Or maybe pick up a parcel, visit a local produce market, or attend an EV info session hosted onsite.
These ideas aren’t hypothetical. They’re already being rolled out in some parts of the world, and Australia is well positioned to follow suit. Regional areas, in particular, could benefit by transforming old servos into multi-use community assets.
What About Traditional Fuels?
Petrol and diesel aren’t disappearing overnight. Australia’s vehicle fleet will take decades to fully electrify. So, many modern servos will adopt a hybrid model for the time being, offering both EV charging and traditional fuels.
Over time, though, we can expect the ratio to shift. As EV adoption grows, fast chargers will take over more of the forecourt. The fuel bowsers will shrink, and the digital screens, solar panels, and battery systems will expand.
Planning Ahead
For businesses in the service station game, now is the time to plan for this transition. Location will still matter, but so will access to grid upgrades, solar exposure, parking layout, and zoning regulations.
