What To Do When Your Circuit Breaker Trips (Dos and Don’ts)

A circuit breaker is designed to cut off electricity when it senses something wrong. The three most basic reasons for a tripped breaker are circuit overload, short circuit, and earth fault. An overload occurs when too many appliances consume power using the same circuit, which exceeds its intended capacity. A short circuit is even riskier—it usually consists of a fault where active and neutral wires touch each other, resulting in an immediate surge in current. An earth fault, on the other hand, happens when current leaks out of the circuit and travels to earth, something which may be done by faulty insulation or damaged appliances.

What You Should Do First

When a breaker has tripped, the initial action is to remain calm and avoid the temptation to reset it at once. A prior investigation of the root cause is essential before any reset attempt. Start by turning off or disconnecting appliances and lighting fixtures on the tripped circuit. In case the cause of the trip was an overload, reconnecting everything immediately may only result in another trip. Ease the load on the circuit first before adding power.

How To Properly Reset the Breaker

After you’ve minimized the load, proceed to the switchboard. If the lights are off, use a flashlight or the light from your phone to enable you to see. You must never fumble around in the dark when it involves electrical devices. Carefully open the switchboard cover and inspect the circuit breakers. Most of the time, a tripped breaker will be halfway or off, as opposed to the others that are in the on position. Some houses also have residual current devices (RCDs) or safety switches—these may also trip due to an earth leakage.

When resetting a breaker, safety comes first. It’s good practice to stand slightly to the side of the switchboard and look away while flipping the switch. This precaution reduces your risk in the unlikely event of an arc flash or electrical spark. Use one hand to flip the breaker fully to the off position and then to on. If it holds, you’ve successfully reset it.

Checking for Faulty Devices

Don’t go ahead and plug everything back in right away. Begin plugging back appliances and devices individually. This will allow you to determine if there is a particular item that is the problem. As an example, if you plug in the heater and the breaker still trips, the heater could be bad or perhaps just consuming too much power on that circuit. Occasionally the issue isn’t how many appliances but a condition with one of them.

The Significance of Labeling Your Switchboard

One of the best things you can do afterward is to properly label your switchboard. Most importantly, many switchboards are either unlabeled or vaguely labeled as “lights” or “power.” A more specific tag like “kitchen power points” or “living room heater” can be a huge asset the next time a breaker trips. It lets you react in time and identify the problem area without guessing.

When to Call an Electrician

If the same breaker continues tripping time and time again, it’s time to call a licensed electrician. In Australia, it’s against the law and dangerous to perform electrical work if you are not qualified. A professional can perform testing to figure out if the problem is with the wiring, the breaker, or an individual appliance. Tripping repeatedly may be indicative of deeper issues such as a loose connection, cabling deterioration, or a faulty circuit breaker.

What You Shouldn’t Do

You should never have to reset a circuit breaker twice without finding out why it tripped initially. Some individuals approach tripping as a nuisance, an annoyance—just switch it back and leave it. But tripping circuit breakers doesn’t happen by chance. They are warning signs, and their ignoring can have grim repercussions. In case of a smell of burning, smoldering marks on the switchboard, or any indication of heat, stop at once and seek assistance. These are symptoms of major faults and must never be ignored.

Another thing to keep in mind is never to touch exposed wires or attempt to open the panel more than what is provided for simple access. The interior of a switchboard may hold live parts even if a breaker is de-energized. There is no safe method for an unqualified individual to proceed beyond the surface reset. Only trained electricians have the capability of working on internal wiring and switchgear.

Avoid Overloading Power Points

It’s also essential to consider your use of power points and power boards. Many Australian homes use double adaptors or stack multiple appliances onto one power point. This practice can overload the circuit, particularly if you’re running high-demand appliances like portable heaters, toasters, or air fryers. Instead, spread these appliances across different outlets and circuits. Avoid having several heat-generating appliances on one circuit at the same time, since they will draw a great amount of current.

Finding Faulty Appliances

A second likely reason for frequent trips is a malfunctioning appliance. Stale toasters, kettles, irons, or electric fans usually contain internal defects that cause earth leakage or short circuits. If you think that an appliance is causing the trip, plug it into another outlet on another circuit and observe whether it trips there as well. If it trips there too, it’s probably the appliance that needs fixing or replacing.

Watch Out for Dampness and Aging Wiring

Coastal homes or older houses can also develop moisture entry or eroded wiring insulation. This leads to leakage currents that cause RCDs to trip. If so, an electrician would suggest replacing wires or enhancing waterproofing around some areas such as outdoor power points.

Preventative Measures Around the Home

When it comes to prevention, it’s wise to have your switchboard inspected every few years, particularly in older homes. Modern switchboards with RCD protection are much safer and more reliable than outdated fuse boxes. If you’re renovating or installing new appliances, your electrician might recommend splitting loads across additional circuits or upgrading the switchboard altogether.

It’s also a good idea to form good electrical habits. Don’t try to run the washing machine, oven, and heater at the same time on the same circuit. Don’t leave the appliances running for hours on end unattended, and always pull the plug on devices not in use for long periods of time, particularly on holidays. These simple habits don’t put much strain on your circuits and decrease the likelihood of the trip happening in the first place.
