What is the best generator for commercial off-grid power?

Prior to selecting a generator, companies must determine how much electricity they consume on a daily basis. Certain companies, such as factories, consume a significant amount of electricity on a constant basis, while others, such as warehouses, can consume less. The generator must be large enough to provide all the power that the company requires, particularly at peak periods during the day.

Why Generators Are Important in an Off-Grid System

Generators come in handy when solar panels and batteries are not able to provide sufficient energy. It might be more cost-effective for a business to operate a generator if it will use power for extended periods of time. On cloudy days, solar panels are not generating sufficient power, so a generator can take over. If there is no room for lots of solar panels, a generator can assist with the workload.

The Proper Size Generator

The generator must be large enough to accommodate peak electricity demand. A good guideline is that the generator must be 1.5 to 2 times larger than the inverter, which converts battery power into usable electricity. For instance, if the inverter is 50 kW, the generator must be 75 kW to 100 kW. The generator must also accommodate the additional power required when machines, such as motors or pumps, come on.

Types of Generators and Fuel Options

Generators are available in various sizes and run on various fuels, such as diesel, petrol, LPG, and natural gas. Diesel generators are generally the most suitable for businesses since they are powerful and efficient. They are available in two speeds: 1500 RPM (which is more suitable for everyday use) and 3000 RPM (which is generally employed for smaller or backup generators). Petrol and gas generators are suitable for small businesses that do not employ a generator frequently.

Generators are rated differently based on the way they will be utilized. A standby generator is used for emergencies when the primary power fails. A continuous generator delivers power continuously at a constant rate. A prime power generator can operate continuously and can support heavy loads.

Generators are quoted in kilowatts (kW) and kilovolt-amps (kVA). Power factor measures how well the generator converts the fuel to real power. Many generators use an 0.8 power factor, which gives an 8 kVA about 6.4 kW actual power. For optimal use, a generator would need to run at roughly 80-85% capacity.

Operating from Solar and Battery

A generator needs to be part of a full system that involves solar panels and batteries. Solar panels generate power for everyday use, and batteries save additional power for later use. A generator is present for when solar power and batteries are not sufficient. Smart controllers can assist in determining when to transition between solar, battery, and generator power to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Some of the appliances, such as pumps and refrigerators, require additional power to start. This is referred to as a power surge. The generator should be able to provide these surges without going off. This is why companies must pick a generator with a robust alternator that will be able to provide these bursts in power requirements.

According to Australian Rules and Standards

In Australia, off-grid power systems are subject to stringent regulations. AS/NZS 4509.2:2010 addresses the installation and maintenance of standalone power systems. AS/NZS 5139:2019 is battery safety. Generators also need to comply with environmental regulations regarding emissions and noise reduction. It is advisable to engage professionals who know these regulations to make sure the system is safe and compliant.
