Circuit Breakers – Types of Miniature Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers play a very important role in the world of electrical safety, in both industrial and residential settings. These are necessary for preventing faults in electricity and ensuring that electrical systems function properly, and they are available in different types that can be chosen based on individual needs. Let’s explain each of them.

Residual Current Operated Circuit Breakers (RCBO)

This is an overcurrent modular residual current breaker with an overcurrent feature, also known as an RCBO. It’s a 1P+N type circuit-breaker, with 1 protected pole, rated current 20A In, and a tripping curve C. The protection class of earth leakage shall be of type AC, with a sensitivity of 30mA. The time lag of earth leakage shall be without time lag. According to standard 0, the rated short circuit breaking capacity Icn is up to 6000A.
Safety and Installation
This device is safe from every short-circuit, cable overload, possible electric shock in cases of indirect contact, and fire hazards. Plug-on installation is fast, easy, and without connection errors for more safety. An operating test button is located on the front panel.
Standards and Durability
This device is designed to comply with IEC 61009-1 and TIS 909-2548. It has an electrical endurance of up to 5000 cycles and a mechanical endurance of up to 20000 cycles.
Electrical Specifications
The Ue operational voltage is 230VAC or 240VAC. The Ui rated insulation voltage is 400VAC. The Uimp rated impulse withstand voltage is 4kV. The frequency is 50/60Hz.
Physical Characteristics
The color of the device is black, RAL9005. The dimensions are (W) 19mm x (H) 110mm x (D) 85mm. Weight: 186g. IP20, protection degree class according to IEC/EN 60529, up to IP40 once in modular enclosure, with an operating temperature: -15°C to 60°C and storage: -40°C to 85°C.

Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB)

It is a circuit breaker with 3 protected poles and 3P, rated current 40A, and a C tripping curve. The rated short-circuit breaking capacity reaches up to 10,000 A at 220 V AC according to IEC 60898-1.

Protection and Indicators
Protection against short circuits; protection of the cable against overload by this device. On the front panel, by the position of the handle, it has a fault tripping indication.

It has an electrical endurance going up to 4000 cycles and a mechanical endurance going up to 10,000 cycles.
Electrical Specifications
The operational voltage Ue is 220VAC. The rated insulation voltage Ui is 500VAC. The rated impulse withstand voltage Uimp is 4kV. The frequency of operation is 50Hz or 60Hz.
Installation and Physical Characteristics
Mountable on DIN rail for modular installation. The width is 6 pitches of 9mm. Device Colour Light grey, RAL7035. Dimensions: W 54mm x H 81mm x D 66.5mm. Protection according to IEC 60529 standard IP20 and IP40 in enclosure. Operating temperature: -5°C to 60°C. Storage temperature range: –40°C to 85°C.

Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB)

MCCBs are fitted with an electronic trip unit that offers performance suitable for the application. Electronic versions are highly accurate protection from 100A to 630A for AC, 50/60Hz low voltage electrical installation and from 220V up to 690V.

Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers (ELCB)

It is a 1P+N Circuit Breaker; rated current: 20A. The earth leakage protection class shall be of AC type. Sensitivity: 30mA; voltage-independent technology. This protects against short circuits, cable overload, electrical shock by indirect contact, and fire hazards.
Protection and Compliance
This DPN Vigi residual current device provides complete protection to final circuits against overcurrents and insulation faults. This device provides full protection to the user from electrical shocks by direct contacts of 30 mA. This device complies with the standard EN 61009-1 and IEC 61009-1.
Durability
Electrical endurance goes up to 20,000 cycles. Mechanical endurance goes up to 20,000 cycles.
Electrical Specifications
The Ui rated insulation voltage is 400VAC. The Uimp rated impulse withstand voltage shall be 4kV. The pollution degree is 3.
Installation and Physical Characteristics
It can be mounted on a DIN rail. Pitch: 9 mm; Number of beams: 4. Color of the device: white, RAL 9003. Weight: 0.19 kg. Protective degree: IP 20 and IP 40 in housing. Operating temperature: -5°C to +60°C. Storage temperature: -40°C to +85°C.

Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCB)

Through the identification of leakage currents, it finds a way to protect both electric shock and fires. At the current time, it operates at voltage levels of 230V for single-phase systems and 400V for three-phase systems.
Current Ratings
The rated current of the device is 16A or 32A, which should be consistent with the protected load. The rated residual operating current is IΔn, for example, 30mA, to specify the leakage level that causes tripping.
Types and Configuration
Different residual current features are presented in RCCBs of varying types: AC, A, B, and F. They can be 2- or 4-pole, depending on the connection’s phase configuration.
Criteria and Operation
They are expected to satisfy some criteria regarding insulation and breaking capacity. To ensure proper operation, the RCCB must meet the system requirements, temperature conditions, and protection class standards.

Residual Current Device (RCD)

These circuit breakers belong to the orbit of key elements in electrical safety. Some of the principal specifications include several basic parameters for the rated residual operating current I₀, usually 30 mA for personal protection. They define the level of leakage current at which an RCD shall trip.
Voltage and Frequency
They are designed for standard voltages of 230V or 400V and frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
Tripping Characteristics
Tripping characteristics state whether the RCD will detect residual currents of the alternating type (Type AC) or pulsating DC (Type A).
Breaking Capacity
Rated breaking capacity Iₔc is the maximum fault current that can be safely interrupted by the RCD.
Impulse Withstand Voltage
Rated impulse withstand voltage (denoted by U₀) is the maximum impulse voltage that the RCD can withstand.
Certification and Installation
Ensure that the RCD is certified for relevant standards and rated to the number of poles and mounting physical requirements of your electrical system.

Motor Protection Circuit Breakers (MPCB)

An MPCB is designed to offer protection to an electric motor from phenomena related to overload, short-circuit, and phase-failure. It operates at rated voltage within 230V single-phase and 400V three-phase systems.
Current Ratings and Adjustments
Its rated current is adjustable for different motor sizes and ranges from 0.4A to several hundred amps. Overload protection is provided through adjustment of the settings to a percentage of the rated current, while short-circuit protection is ensured through instantaneous tripping.
Additional Protection Features
This includes phase failure and imbalance protection to prevent damage to the motor.
Operating Conditions and Mounting
Typical operating temperature range is -5°C to +40°C; mounting options include DIN rail or panel mounts.
Additional Features
Other available features can include manual or auto-reset, status indication lights, and auxiliary contacts for remote signaling.

Single Pole Circuit Breakers

Single Pole Circuit Breakers protect individual circuits against overload and short circuits; they normally operate at 230V for single-phase systems.
Current Ratings
Rated currents are available from 6A to 63A depending on the requirement of the circuit.
Tripping Characteristics
Tripping characteristics are types B, C, and D. Type B is common for residential applications, while types C or D are more suitable for sensitive or inductive loads.
Breaking Capacity
It has a rated breaking capacity, usually measured in kA, which is the maximum fault current that the breaker can interrupt; this typically lies between 6kA and 10kA.
Operating Conditions and Mounting
These circuit breakers operate within a specified temperature range of -5°C to +40°C and are mounted on a DIN rail for convenience.

3-Pole Miniature Circuit Breakers

Three-Pole Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) protect three-phase electrical circuits from overloads and short circuits, typically handling up to 400V.
Current Ratings
They come with rated currents ranging from 6A to 63A, depending on the circuit’s needs.
Tripping Characteristics
The tripping characteristics are categorized into types B, C, and D, with type B for residential and types C and D for commercial or industrial applications.
Breaking Capacity
The breaking capacity, rated in kiloamperes (kA), indicates the maximum fault current the MCB can safely interrupt, often ranging from 6kA to 10kA or more.
Operating Conditions and Mounting
They operate within a temperature range of -5°C to +40°C, ensuring dependable performance in various conditions. These MCBs are typically mounted on DIN rails, facilitating straightforward installation and maintenance in electrical panels.
