Solar with a generator – What is the best way to sync?

Combining solar panels and generators can be complicated but is increasingly so in Australia. Individuals wish to reduce the costs of electricity bills and utilize higher percentages of renewable energy. Having both systems operating correctly and safely, however, needs careful consideration.

WorkSafe NT Guidelines

Generators and solar panels have to be installed safely. According to WorkSafe NT, the solar panels have to be wired to the change-over switch side of the grid unless designed for use with a generator. Such an arrangement prevents safety issues and maintains the performance of both systems.

Solar and Generator Issues

SolarQuotes, an Australian website that provides information on solar power, cautions that solar panels and generators are likely to develop issues if installed improperly. The solar system may not detect the generator, or additional power will feed back into the generator and destroy it. Professionals such as CleanTech Controls advise using specialized control devices to prevent this from happening.

Why You Need an Expert

Because there are so many dangers involved, it is wise to seek assistance from a certified electrician or solar installer. They understand how to link solar panels and generators safely and comply with Australian safety regulations.

Solar panels generate electricity and send surplus power into the grid. Solar panels don’t function during a grid failure unless they contain a battery or generator. Generators offer backup power but must be properly linked to solar systems.

Solar panels are assisted in interacting with the grid by solar inverters but perhaps not a generator. Failing to connect it appropriately could see the inverter being forced offline. Others might be in the inability to cope with supplementary power from a solar panel to be a contributing factor.

Synchronizing Solar and Generators

Solar panels and generators must cooperate harmoniously. Special controllers maintain the power stable. Without them, the power of the generator may not be stable, and the solar system may shut down.

One large risk is that power from the solar system is fed back into the generator. This may damage or pose a safety risk. Preventing this issue can be achieved using change-over switches, hybrid inverters, or export control devices.

Australia has strict regulations regarding the use of solar panels and generators in combination. Energy Networks Australia provides instructions on how to install these systems. WorkSafe NT advises against dangerous configurations. Electrical safety regulations vary in each state, so professional advice is necessary.

Best Ways to Use Solar with Generators

The simplest solution is to switch off the solar system while the generator is operating. This is easy and inexpensive. Another, more costly, option is to employ a controller that allows both systems to operate in harmony.

Hybrid inverters simplify the coordination between solar panels, the grid, and generators. They prevent solar power from entering the generator. Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) also assist by switching power sources seamlessly.

Certain devices enable solar panels and generators to cooperate. Power-stabilizing relays and specific controllers maintain a steady power. Proper control of using power prevents the generator from over-exerting itself. Batteries may save excess solar power for future use.
