Low Voltage Metering Requirements per AS/NZS 3000

Low voltage metering is significant in the distribution of electricity in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Metering is important because of proper measurement of electrical consumption and safety compliance using applied safety measures. The following article describes what metering requirements are according to the AS/NZS 3000, more particularly through the specifications of a current transformer (CT) for any load group.

The Relevance of Metering

The key reasons for precise metering are:
  • Energy Management: A basic principle in energy management is an appreciation for how much energy is used; optimizing its use will lead to a reduction in cost.
  • Precise Billing: With the guarantee of reliable metering, consumers will only be billed for their consumed electricity.
  • Safety: Faulty metering will trigger overload conditions that could present dangers to equipment and people.

Metering Requirement of Load Group

AS/NZS 3000 stipulates certain requirements on the number of meters based on maximum calculated demand per phase. It states:

Low Voltage Metering
Important Aspects
Specifications for Current Transformer
  • Ratio: Specifies the ratio between primary and secondary current.
  • Burden Rating: The maximum load in VA that the CT can carry without degrading its accuracy.
  • Extended Range: It can withstand temporary overloads, providing additional margins for safety.
Compliance with AS/NZS 3000
This follows all the regulations for the sake of compliance with the national safety standards so as to avoid electrical faults and have an effective management of energy.

The proper management of low voltage electrical systems is highly important and very much depends on adhering to the metering requirements set forth by AS/NZS 3000. It helps understand the specifications for current transformers and metering equipment so that safe, accurate, and efficient usage of electricity in various applications is ensured. It helps not only in achieving energy efficiency but also protects from potential hazards in electrical installations.
