How Do Battery Energy Storage System Work?

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a system that stores electricity in rechargeable batteries so we can utilize it later. The batteries can store energy from solar panels, wind turbines, or even power plants. When we require additional energy, the batteries discharge stored power to maintain everything running smoothly.

A BESS consists of three principal components. The battery pack, where energy is stored, is the first component. The second component is the power conversion system, which converts the stored energy into usable form for homes and enterprises. The third component is the energy management system, which regulates how and when the battery charges and discharges power.

Types of Batteries Used in BESS

There are various types of batteries used in BESS. The most common type is the lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion batteries are applied in phones and electric vehicles due to their capacity to store a great amount of energy and also sustain for a long time. Another battery type is the lead-acid battery, which is less expensive but has a shorter lifespan. Flow batteries are another possibility. They use liquid to hold energy and last for decades, which makes them valuable for large-scale energy storage projects.

Why Do Battery Energy Storage Systems Matter?

One of the largest reasons BESS matters is that it maintains the stability of the electricity supply. Sometimes, there’s just too much electricity being generated, and at other times, not enough. A BESS saves excess energy to be released when necessary so that there will be no instant power outages or issues with electricity.

BESS also allows us to utilize more renewable sources, such as solar and wind energy. These are not always available when we want them. Solar panels, for instance, can only produce when the sun is up. A BESS saves solar power during the day so we can be sure to have it to use at night.

It can also be cost-saving to use BESS. Electricity is pricier at some times of the day when many people are consuming it. With a BESS, energy can be saved when it is cheaper and utilized later when it is more expensive. Companies and households can lower their electricity bills accordingly.

Another significant advantage of BESS is that it offers backup power in case of emergencies. In the event of a storm or other issue causing a power outage, a BESS can supply power to hospitals, schools, and households until the normal power supply is restored.

Battery Energy Storage in Australia

Australia is applying BESS in large projects to enhance energy supply. Among the largest of these projects is the Victorian Big Battery in the vicinity of Geelong. This battery can store a large amount of electricity and assists in maintaining the stability of the power grid. Another project is the Gannawarra Energy Storage System, which stores solar farm energy in Victoria. In South Australia, the Lake Bonney Battery Energy Storage System assists in managing wind energy so that it can be utilized when necessary.

Challenges of Using Battery Energy Storage Systems

Although BESS is extremely beneficial, there are certain challenges. One of the difficulties is the expense. Batteries can cost a lot, but their prices are decreasing as technology gets better. Another difficulty is that batteries do eventually wear out and have to be replaced. Researchers are developing better batteries that will last longer. There are environmental issues too because extracting materials for batteries can damage the environment. Reusing old batteries and discovering new materials can cure this dilemma. Additionally, some individuals also concern themselves about safety hazards like battery fires but are being rendered safer by correct management and advances in technology.

BESS will be even more crucial in the future. Next-generation batteries like solid-state batteries will hold higher energy, longer lifetimes, and be more secure. Companies and governments are investing in BESS to ensure we have efficient energy and are less pollutive.

Australia has more projects in the pipeline, such as the Joel Joel Battery Project in Victoria and the Brendale Battery Project, which can power 300,000 homes. These projects will assist in ensuring Australia has clean, reliable energy in the future.
