DC Circuit Breakers – What are the Different Types?

DC circuit breakers are electrical switches designed to interrupt the flow of electric current during overloads, short circuits, or faults, providing overcurrent protection to prevent overheating, fires, and component damage.

Purpose

Circuit breakers protect electrical circuits by automatically opening them to prevent damage from excessive current, also known as overcurrent protection.

Types of DC Circuit Breakers

  • Solid-State Circuit Breakers (SSCBs)
  • Mechanical Circuit Breakers (MCBs)
  • Hybrid Circuit Breakers (HCBs)

Features of High-Speed DC Circuit Breakers

High-speed DC circuit breakers can reduce the current in the main circuit in 0.01 seconds or less after detecting a DC overcurrent or excessive current rise.

Applications

  • 750V DC Circuit Breakers: Used in urban railway converter substations, traction power substations, and energy-intensive industries.
  • 1000V DC Circuit Breakers: Common in solar power systems to collect and supply DC power to power conditioning systems for conversion into AC power.
  • 1500V DC Circuit Breakers: Utilized in DC power distribution systems to protect electrical components from damage caused by excessive current.
  • 2P DC Circuit Breakers: Used in off-grid systems for battery DC string protection, general-purpose circuits, and outlets.
  • 4P DC Circuit Breakers: Ideal for applications requiring disconnection of three-phase and neutral conductors, unbalanced loads, and areas needing extra protection from electric shocks.
