Switchboard upgrades are one of the most important steps when preparing your home for a solar installation. But despite the growing number of households going solar in Australia, many people (and even some installers) still make critical mistakes that can cause long-term safety issues, compliance problems, or added costs down the track. Let’s talk about the most common missteps and how you can avoid them.
Not Upgrading When It’s Needed
One of the biggest mistakes we often see is homeowners skipping the switchboard upgrade entirely—usually to save money. This is especially risky in homes with old ceramic fuses or those lacking safety switches (RCDs). These older boards weren’t designed to handle the added complexity of a solar system. Even if your system “works,” the board might not meet current Australian standards or protect your home adequately.
In many cases, homes built before the 1990s will require at least a partial upgrade to be solar-ready. And if you’re still running on an old fuse box with no RCDs, it’s not just outdated—it’s dangerous.
Underestimating Future Load
Another common oversight is failing to plan for future energy needs. Sure, your current solar system might only feed back a few kilowatts, but what happens when you add a battery, an EV charger, or upgrade your air con system?
We’ve seen plenty of switchboards that were technically “upgraded” for a basic solar install, but left no spare room for expansion. That means when the homeowner wants to add another circuit later, they’re back to square one.
A good switchboard upgrade should always account for future additions—like battery storage, electric vehicle charging, or even a second inverter. It costs a little more upfront but saves you from another major job later.
Lack of Compliance with AS/NZS 3000 and AS/NZS 4777
In Australia, solar switchboard upgrades must comply with national wiring rules (AS/NZS 3000) and solar inverter requirements (AS/NZS 4777 series). These standards exist for a reason: safety, coordination, and system performance.
Unfortunately, some installations fail to meet these requirements. For example, it’s not uncommon to see improperly labelled isolators, shared neutral links that don’t meet disconnection requirements, or a lack of surge protection where it’s clearly required. This isn’t just a paperwork issue—it can affect how safely your system operates and may invalidate warranties or insurance claims.
Always ask your installer if they’re familiar with the current standards and if they’re including all the necessary protective devices in the upgrade.
No Room Left in the Board
It might sound trivial, but this one causes more headaches than you’d think. Many upgrades only just accommodate the solar inverter—leaving no room for future growth or even proper segregation.
A well-planned board should have spare circuit breakers or at least space for future additions. It should also separate the general power, lighting, solar, and main switch with clear labelling. When everything is crammed in without a plan, it creates confusion during maintenance or emergencies—and makes future work more expensive.
Using Low-Quality or Non-Compliant Components
We all want to save money, but cutting corners on components is not the place to do it. Sadly, we’ve seen installations where cheaper, non-compliant breakers, switchgear, or enclosures have been used. Sometimes even recycled components are repurposed from other jobs.
Not only is this illegal under Australian rules, it’s also a fire hazard. Your switchboard is the central hub of your electrical system—it must be reliable, compliant, and durable. Ask your installer what brand of breakers, RCDs, and enclosures they’re using. Stick with reputable names that meet Australian standards and offer warranties.
Overlooking Protection Devices
Modern switchboards should include more than just breakers. In a solar-ready setup, your board should also have:
- Residual Current Devices (RCDs) for all general power and lighting circuits,
- Surge protection devices (SPDs), especially to protect your inverter,
- Properly rated main switches and inverter isolators,
- Circuit protection for battery systems if applicable.
We’ve encountered upgrades that skipped SPDs entirely or didn’t separate RCDs properly. This might seem minor—until lightning hits nearby or your system trips and takes the whole house down.
Make sure your upgrade includes all essential safety gear, even if it’s not specifically “required” in your local area.
Retaining Dangerous or Outdated Wiring
A switchboard upgrade is the perfect time to inspect and replace any old wiring. If your home still has cotton-insulated VIR or TRS cabling, or any wiring without an earth, it should be replaced immediately. These cables pose a serious risk and often don’t comply with today’s minimum safety standards.
Unfortunately, we’ve seen upgraded switchboards that leave these legacy cables in place—usually to cut costs. Even if the board itself looks brand new, the underlying wiring can still be a fire or electrocution risk.
We always recommend a pre-upgrade inspection of the entire electrical system, so you know exactly what needs replacing. Don’t wait until something goes wrong.
Poor Workmanship
This might be one of the most frustrating parts: your system meets all the technical requirements, but the work is just plain messy. Loose wiring, poorly fixed breakers, messy conduit entry points, or gaps in the enclosure—it might all “work,” but it’s far from professional.
A good switchboard installation should be neat, clearly labelled, sealed against dust and insects, and laid out in a way that makes sense. If your installer is rushing or cutting visual corners, you’ve got to ask: what else are they skipping?
Always check your contractor’s previous work and ask to see photos of similar switchboard upgrades they’ve completed. It’s worth doing your homework.
Failing to Notify the DNSP or Retailer
Every solar installation in Australia must be registered with your local Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP). This ensures the grid knows when a new system is connected and allows them to manage exports and faults more effectively.
Sometimes, switchboard upgrades happen without proper notification, especially when done separately from the solar install. If the DNSP isn’t informed or the connection agreement isn’t updated, it can cause delays or issues when energising your system—or worse, your export might be blocked.
A reputable solar installer will handle all DNSP paperwork for you. But if you’re arranging the switchboard upgrade separately, make sure everyone’s on the same page and following procedure.
Not Accounting for Asbestos
Older switchboards in Australia—especially those installed before 1985—may contain asbestos panels or backing boards. These materials are dangerous and must be handled by licensed professionals. If your installer isn’t trained or certified to handle asbestos, they could be putting themselves and your family at risk.
If your board might contain asbestos, don’t attempt to inspect or remove it yourself. Talk to a licensed electrician and arrange safe removal before any upgrade is done.
