🚀Australia’s Government Incentives for Battery Installations: Everything You Need to Know in 2025

If you’ve been thinking about installing a battery system in your home, now might be the best time to do it. The Australian government is offering some great incentives to help make home battery systems more affordable. These incentives are part of the country’s bigger plan to make energy more sustainable and reduce costs for everyday Australians.

In this article, we are going to guide you through the various incentives that already exist, both on the federal as well as various state levels.

⚡Federal Government: Cheaper Home Batteries Program

From the 1st of July 2025, the Australian government will introduce the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The program will offer rebates of up to $4,000 to households that have battery storage systems installed. The program’s concept is to reduce the initial cost of installing these systems and make them more affordable to Australian families.

In the coming years, the government will subsidize a million battery installs by 2030. That is a big deal, as it can save Australian homes up to 90% of their energy bills.

You’ll have to install the battery system with an existing or new solar installation in order to qualify for the rebate. The rebate will be applied under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) since it’s also offered for solar systems.

Why It’s Worth It

By adding a battery to your solar array, you are able to capture excess energy during the day and use it when you need it at night. This cuts back on your draw from the grid and allows you to keep more of your own energy. Dreading sticker shock electricity bills? This program might be just what you need.

🏠State and Territory Incentives: What’s Available Near You?

Apart from the federal rebate, there are also state and territory programs in Australia that provide additional incentives for the installation of batteries. Below is an outline of the various programs:

New South Wales (NSW)

Save between $2,400 and the cost of installing a battery if you already have solar panels installed.

Additional rebates of $250 to $400 if you connect your battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).

These incentives will begin on November 1, 2024.

Victoria

Victoria is offering interest-free loans up to $8,800 for eligible households installing approved battery systems. If you’re looking to install a battery, there are still 1,212 loans available for the 2024-2025 period.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

The ACT has the most generous incentives among the ones listed, including zero-interest loans of up to $15,000 for solar and battery systems. They also provide rebates of up to $3,500 for each kilowatt-hour of battery capacity when used with solar panels.

Northern Territory

If you reside in the Northern Territory, you can qualify for $400 per kilowatt-hour of usable battery capacity, up to $12,000. That incentive doubled recently in December 2024 to encourage more residents to embrace battery storage.

Queensland

Unfortunately, Queensland’s Battery Booster Program ended on May 8, 2024, and, therefore, are no longer existing battery subsidies in Queensland today. However, always best to keep up to date with any new programs.

âś…How to Get Started: The Steps You Need to Take

  • Check Your Eligibility: Make sure you’re eligible for your state or territory.
  • Find a Qualified Installer: Hire a certified installer from your local approved supplier list.
  • Apply for Incentives: Apply under the appropriate program.
  • Install Your Battery System: Get your selected installer to install it.
  • Connect to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP): Where offered in your region, connecting to a VPP will allow you to get the most out of your new battery system.

🌱Why Install a Battery?

These government incentives form part of Australia’s overall policy for encouraging renewable energy, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and improving energy security. When you invest in a battery system, you save on your consumption from the grid and make the energy system self-sustaining.

Battery storage provides you with the ability to save energy from the sun (that your solar panels make) and use it at night. This reduces energy bills and keeps you less reliant on costly grid power. And you’re helping create a cleaner tomorrow.

Don’t Wait – Act Now!

These government programs won’t be around forever, so if you’ve been thinking about installing a home battery, now is the perfect time to take action. Whether it’s rebates, interest-free loans, or grants, there are plenty of ways to save money and reduce your environmental footprint.

Make sure you’re eligible, find an accredited installer, and start the process to get your battery system installed today.
